HMN 001D: Sustainable Development with American Indian Communities (unique number: 40151), a DemTex course, is meant to introduce concepts of sustainable development and democratic education, through the context of service-learning with American Indian community partners. The class is designed to be completed as a distance learning course, with face-to-face meet-ups limited to optional group film nights - and, potentially, an optional spring break site visit / service trip, which students will organize. All students of this course are required to attempt to complete a course-relevent distance service project in partnership with an American Indian community organization or group and document and reflect on this process. The distance learning approach of the class will help prepare students for this work. Please read through the course outline before registering. Official registration is limited to undergraduate students at the University of Texas at Austin (UT). Other students (including graduate students) are encouraged to participate in this course - possibly, for credit via independent study options at UT and elsewhere (this option requires much student initiative). If interested, please contact the course instructor, Mark Tirpak - (512) 380-1051. (NOTE: this course is offered via UT's DemTex program, which allows students and recent graduates to create and facilitate courses with the sponsorship of current UT faculty members. The faculty sponsor for this DemTex course is Prof. Benjamin Gregg, Dept. of Government) |
